How to eliminate a proxy server in an intranet com loop?

We have a desktop legacy app, which calls a remote server at our main campus. This server, running NT3.5!! calls another dept's old main frame and authenticates to it. If we take this proxy out of the loop the app cannot directly access this old funky mainframe. Since this proxy is using an old funky OS itself we have to use compatws.inf for desktops using this 1 app and we have to use WINS servers so this 1 proxy can talk to our win 2k and win2003 DC's. Our TCO is high and we wish to lower it. The app is written in C!! The mainframe guys will take it offline next year and move all its DB's to another server. Should we wait it out or is their a temp fix to lower our TCO that we can employ now? Oh and rewriting the app won't work because our boss is an old F$#T.

I'm not sure I understand how exactly your network apps are configured anyways ...if these below are any help then try one of them ...it might help you get rid of that NT 3.5 machine ...
